Get to know Bayswater

Bayswater is a working-class neighborhood on the eastern shore of Bayside, Queens. It has a population of 19,128 and an area of 0.61 square miles. This neighborhood was named after the English town of Bayswater, whose name means “the water which flows into the sea” in Old English.

Bayswater was originally called “Bainbridge” after William Bainbridge, who came from England to America in 1675 to become one of the founders of Salem, Massachusetts. He married the daughter of Governor John Winthrop, Jr., who later became governor himself and gave his name to Winthrop Street in Lower Manhattan (today’s City Hall).

The area that would become Bayswater was initially used as farmland by early Dutch settlers. The Dutch purchased it from the local natives for $1 per acre in 1637. They were known as “patroons” because they received this land grant from their government to settle it with their families and livestock (similarly, Manhattan had been purchased from its native inhabitants by Peter Minuit for 60 guilders worth).

Bayswater History & Culture

Bayswater is a peninsula on a peninsula, a quiet leafy enclave that has escaped the sad fate of so many neighborhoods in Far Rockaway thanks in part to zoning laws that prohibit “out-of-character multifamily and attached developments “. Bayswater started as a planned community laid out by developer William Trist Bailey in 1878. The property was purchased from descendants of Richard Cornell, the area’s first European settler who bought the land in 1687. In 1898 Rockaway became part of the consolidated Greater New York and was designated as the Fifth Ward, Borough of Queens.
