The name stems from the Dutch word ‘midwout’, meaning “middle woods,” because the terrain was formerly densely forested between Bushwick and Brooklyn. The forests are now gone, and the neighborhood began to grow in the 1890s after being annexed by Brooklyn, though it took off in the 1920s. In the 1970s, many Midwood inhabitants relocated to the suburbs, and the neighborhood and its commercial areas suffered. During the 1980s, new inhabitants were drawn to Midwood by its tranquil middle-class environment; many were just landed immigrants from all over the world.
