Get to know Hollis

For those who enjoy the hustle and bustle of a town, this area is their go-to spot. Hollis is a fun and active neighborhood with everyone going about their own business. To some, it may seem like the community is a little impatient, it is all because of how busy they are. Almost like an omen for busy cities that Hollis is also an example of.

The area is only quiet during the night, and is ideal for singles who prefer public commute. Driving in the city is a task: because of the traffic. Number one reason why people prefer the subway and busses for work and education.

The neighborhood finds its name among the 22 top places to live in New York City. Most locals find all the amenities, and it’s rare for them to move anywhere. The area has a population of around 6000+ people.

The community of Hollis enjoys a safe neighborhood: that at the same time, is well-kept and taken good care of. The residents take pride in their homes and enjoy the services of Zavza Seal: that keeps their homes well-maintained. No matter the weather or amount of rain the area receives, Zavza Seal provides all-around waterproofing, insulation, and concrete repair services that they can rely on.

There is an unmistakable urban-suburban feel in the town, and most of the locals here own their homes. It is rare for a property to be rented out.

The area hosts many great eateries, restaurants, coffee shops, and parks. The neighborhood is mostly home to young professionals and retirees who tilt towards more liberal; politically.

Hollis History & Culture

The first European settlers were Dutch homesteaders in the 17th century. A century later, early in the American Revolutionary War, it was the site of part of the Battle of Long Island, a battle in which the revolutionary Brigadier General Nathaniel Woodhull was captured at a tavern on what is now Jamaica Avenue. Woodhull Avenue in Hollis is named after him. The area remained rural until 1885, when developers turned 136 acres (55 ha) into houses, and the area is still developed primarily with single-family houses. In 1898, it became a part of New York City with the western towns of Queens County.

Since the end of the Korean War, the neighborhood has been settled primarily by African-American families. In recent years, the area has seen a large influx of South Asians and West Indians. The area has a majority of working parents with many early childhood schools in Hollis.
