Case Study: Gutter Downspout Installation for Homeowner in Brooklyn, NY

Client Observation:

A homeowner in Brooklyn, NY reached out to Zavza Seal LLC after noticing pooling water near the foundation of their home. Heavy rainfall was causing water overflow near the back of the house where the gutter downspout was installed. This excess water threatened to seep into the foundation, causing potential structural damage over time.

Diagnosis by Zavza Seal LLC:

Upon inspection, the Zavza Seal LLC team quickly identified the root cause of the problem: the existing gutter downspouts were not effectively redirecting water away from the house. Specifically, the downspout was releasing water too close to the foundation, leading to erosion of the concrete slab and potential cracks in the basement walls. This was particularly risky in Brooklyn where basements are common.

After a thorough evaluation, the team decided that the most effective solution would be to extend the gutter downspout underground to prevent future water damage and create a more efficient drainage system.

Solution Implemented:

The Zavza Seal LLC team proposed a comprehensive solution to address the client’s drainage issues:

  1. Concrete Cutting: The team cut the concrete slab between the gutter downspout and the drainage grill at the back of the house to create a pathway for the new pipe.
  2. Downspout Extension: They installed a 4-inch underground PVC pipe that would connect the gutter downspout to the existing drainage system below the grill. To do this, they excavated a trench underground, ensuring the pipe sloped at a proper grade to allow water to flow freely.
  3. Underground Connection: The PVC pipe was then connected to the existing drainage system beneath the grill, ensuring the rainwater would be redirected efficiently away from the foundation.
  4. Backfilling and Concrete Repair: After completing the underground work, the team backfilled the trench and used 4000 PSI high-strength cement to repair the cut concrete slab. This cement was leveled to match the surrounding surface, ensuring no noticeable difference between the old and new concrete.
  5. Testing and Final Inspection: After the installation, the team tested the system during a simulated rainfall scenario. The water was effectively diverted from the house, and the client was pleased with the results. The repair not only eliminated the drainage problem but also extended the life of the foundation and the home’s structural integrity.
