Project Scope: Blown-in Cellulose Insulation
Area: Attic
Client Location: Lake Grove, NY
Client Observation:
A desperate homeowner in Lake Grove, NY called the Zavza Seal LLC team to check the previously installed insulation in their home. He complained that despite it being there, the home had a lot of cold drafts, noise, and an uncomfortable feel in all seasons so he immediately wanted our expert team to come for an inspection.
Diagnosis by the Team:
The team reached the property the very next day and inspected the house. Their diagnosis was an old and inadequate installed insulation, and no sign of air sealing in the whole property. The team concluded that the attic would be the best area to install the new insulation on top of the old one before air sealing the entire area to completely block off air leakage and soundproof it.
Our Solution:
The Zavza Seal Team immediately started work on the house to make it more comfortable. They worked on a step-by-step strategy to repair and maintain the issue in a strategic way to ensure the success of the project and to stick to the timeline. The strategy they followed was:
- Detailed cleaning:
Our team started with cleaning the entire surface area of the attic where work was to be done to remove any debris and dirt as much as possible before the new insulation could be installed.
- Air Sealing:
Next, we air-sealed the entire subject area to block the flow of air from all gaps, holes, and cracks. We installed sealed Tenmat FF130E covers for this purpose which protect the hi-hats from all kinds of air leakages and bar any unwanted air leakage.
- Rafter Baffles:
We installed Rafter Baffles in each space between the joists extruded from the soffit area to ensure unrestricted airflow from the soffit vents to the ridge vent. Rafter Baffles serve as a very important component by restricting mold growth and eliminating all kinds of moisture and structural component issues.
- Insulation Installation
After sealing the area we then installed blown-in cellulose insulation on top of the existing insulation to achieve an R-value of 49 as recommended by the Dept of Energy for the North East of the US.
The insulation we use is environmentally friendly. It’s fire-resistant and meets a Class 1 rating. It reduces outside noise substantially, offers water and moisture resistance, and excellent sound absorbency. Our goal is to insulate your home in an effective way to improve the home’s energy efficiency. Our insulation is Gold Certified and contributes to a healthier indoor environment.
Additional Work
In addition to the stated project scope above, some more work was done to ensure the best outcome from the insulation and air sealing.
- A foam adhesive to attach an R-10 foam board to the back of the attic access door.
- A U-shaped lumber catwalk (approx. 20 linear feet) from the attic access
- door to the air handler to complete.
- While our crew was in the attic, the project manager checked all the duct work to determine if there was any additional insulation and/or sealing required. In this case, the work done was adequate.
Results
The homeowner was completely satisfied with the team’s work after noticing a remarkable difference in the comfort of his home. The weatherization and soundproofing of the attic was a success which was reflected in the energy bills he later received. He was all praise for the thorough inspection the team conducted to root out the cause of the problem plus the advice he received for the solution. Later he provided an all-star review to the company and was very happy with the energy efficiency of his home plus noise control.
