Overview
Our team recently completed a comprehensive wall and ceiling insulation project for a multi-story residential property in Brooklyn, NY. The homeowner sought to improve the energy efficiency of the home and address drafts coming from poorly insulated exterior walls and ceilings. This case study details how we identified the problem areas and delivered a high-quality solution that enhanced comfort and reduced energy waste.
The Problem: Poor Insulation and Drafty Exterior Walls
The homeowner reported persistent drafts and uneven temperatures throughout the home, particularly in the vestibule, pantry, bathroom, and upper floor rooms. After inspecting the property, we identified the following issues:
✅ Exterior walls and ceilings lacked sufficient insulation, leading to heat loss and cold drafts.
✅ Unsealed walls behind the pantry allowed air leakage.
✅ Poor R-value in walls and ceilings negatively impacted the home’s energy efficiency and indoor comfort.
Leaving these areas unaddressed would continue to result in higher utility bills, reduced comfort, and potential moisture issues inside the home.
The Solution: Dense-Packed Cellulose Insulation and Wall Sealing
We designed a multi-phase insulation and sealing plan tailored to the specific needs of each area in the home.
Subject Area A: 1st Floor Exterior Front Wall and Entrance Vestibule
We started with the first floor front wall (approximately 9 feet by 9 feet) and the entrance vestibule’s two exterior walls (each approximately 4 feet by 9 feet). Our team cut access ports in the walls to accommodate the hoses from our insulation machine. We then dense-packed cellulose insulation into the wall cavities to maximize the R-value and eliminate drafts. Once the insulation was in place, we patched, taped, and compounded the access ports to restore the walls’ original appearance.
Subject Area B: 1st Floor Back Vestibule with Pantry and Back Bathroom
Next, we addressed the back vestibule area with pantry (two exterior walls approximately 7 feet by 9 feet each and ceiling approximately 7 feet by 7 feet) and the back bathroom (two exterior walls approximately 3.5 feet by 9 feet and 7 feet by 9 feet and ceiling approximately 3.5 feet by 7 feet). We carefully disassembled the pantry and set it aside for reassembly after the work was completed. Before insulating, we sealed the wall behind the pantry with high-quality sealants to prevent air leakage. We then insulated all the walls and ceilings in this area following the same dense-packed cellulose method used in Subject Area A.
Subject Area C: 2nd Floor Front Room
Finally, we moved to the second floor front room, which included the front exterior wall (approximately 9 feet by 13 feet), the side wall (approximately 9 feet by 17 feet), and the ceiling (approximately 13 feet by 17 feet). Similar to the other areas, we cut access ports, dense-packed the cellulose insulation, and then patched, taped, and compounded all access points to complete the job.
