Town/Neighborhood: Farmingdale
Borough/County: Suffolk County
Construction Type: Residential
Problem
The homeowner in Farmingdale, NY contacted Zavza Seal to address multiple concerns related to poor insulation, potential mold exposure, and energy inefficiency. The attic space on the first floor had aging insulation that was no longer effective, and the rim joist area lacked proper air sealing, contributing to drafts and heat loss.
Additionally, the bathroom’s exterior walls were under-insulated, leading to temperature fluctuations and increased energy bills. The client sought a solution that would not only improve thermal performance but also enhance indoor air quality and reduce noise transmission.
The homeowner needed a reliable insulation contractor in Farmingdale who could deliver eco-friendly, high-performance solutions with minimal disruption to the home’s structure.
Solution
Our team at Zavza Seal designed a multi-zone insulation and air sealing strategy using environmentally responsible materials and precision installation techniques.
Subject Area 1: First Floor Attic (Approx. 400 sq.ft)
- We removed the existing insulation from the attic to prepare the space for treatment and upgrade.
- All exposed surfaces were vacuumed and sprayed with an all-natural disinfectant designed to eliminate mold, mildew, viruses, and bacteria.
- The disinfectant used is non-toxic, non-flammable, odorless, and rated with the lowest EPA toxicity level. It also repels rodents and contributes to a healthier indoor environment.
- Once disinfected, we installed closed cell spray foam insulation to achieve an R-30 rating, significantly improving thermal resistance and energy efficiency.
Subject Area 2: Rim Joist of First Floor Attic (Approx. 40 Linear Feet)
- We air sealed the rim joist using closed cell spray foam, a high-performance material that blocks air infiltration and moisture.
- This treatment reduced drafts and helped maintain consistent indoor temperatures, especially during seasonal changes.
Subject Area 3: Bathroom Exterior Walls (Approx. 100 sq.ft)
- We installed blown-in cellulose insulation from the exterior of the home to properly insulate the two bathroom walls.
- The client’s contractor removed the top strip of siding to allow access for drilling 4” ports for insulation delivery.
- After installation, we sealed the access ports using wood putty and spray foam to ensure airtight closure.
- The contractor then replaced the removed siding to restore the exterior finish.
Note: The cellulose insulation used is environmentally friendly, fire-resistant (Class 1 rating), and offers excellent sound absorbency and moisture resistance. It substantially reduces outside noise and contributes to a healthier indoor environment while improving the home’s overall energy efficiency.
