Town/Neighborhood: Brooklyn
Borough/County: Kings County
Construction Type: Residential
Category: Insulation, Energy Efficiency, Soundproofing
Problem:
A homeowner in Brooklyn contacted Zavza Seal LLC to address insulation concerns in a 650 sq. ft. vaulted ceiling area. The home had existing batt insulation in the knee walls and floor cavities, but the ceiling area lacked proper insulation. The rafters inside the knee walls did not require treatment, but the customer sought to improve energy efficiency, reduce noise, and enhance fire safety throughout the living space.
There was no existing access to the area behind the knee walls, which would be required before insulation work could begin. Without adequate ceiling insulation, the homeowner faced fluctuating indoor temperatures, increased energy costs, and vulnerability to moisture infiltration.
Solution:
Subject Area: Vaulted Ceiling (Approximately 650 sq. ft)
Zavza Seal LLC designed a strategic insulation plan for the vaulted ceiling area, focusing on sustainability, performance, and long-term value. The scope excluded the rafters located inside the knee walls, as those areas were already insulated with batt insulation in both the floor and wall assemblies.
Before the installation, the homeowner agreed to cut access doors to the knee walls and provide unobstructed entry to the areas behind them. This allowed our crew to safely and effectively reach the ceiling cavities.
Our insulation approach included:
- Blocking off the far side of each ceiling rafter cavity with batt insulation to create a sealed cavity.
- Blowing in cellulose insulation into the rafter cavities.
- Ensuring complete fill and even distribution of cellulose for optimal performance.
We selected high-performance cellulose insulation for this project. This material is not only environmentally friendly but also meets the Class 1 fire rating, making it fire-resistant. In addition to excellent thermal performance, the insulation significantly reduces outside noise and offers water and moisture resistance, making it ideal for urban homes in Brooklyn.
The product we use is Gold Certified and contributes to a healthier indoor environment by minimizing airborne pollutants and allergens.
Conclusion:
This project in Brooklyn demonstrates Zavza Seal’s commitment to creating healthier, safer, and more energy-efficient homes. By applying our expertise in cellulose insulation, we transformed an under-insulated vaulted ceiling into a high-performance thermal and acoustic barrier.
The result is a more comfortable living space with better temperature control, reduced utility costs, and enhanced indoor air quality.
