Case Study: Dense Pack Wall Insulation Upgrade in Commack, NY
Exposed wall cavity in Merrick, NY home after controlled sheetrock removal to investigate mold contamination.

Client Problem:

A homeowner in Commack NY contacted Zavza Seal because their home was experiencing poor energy efficiency and inconsistent indoor temperatures. During colder months, the exterior walls felt noticeably chilly, and the heating system had to work overtime to maintain comfort. The homeowner also reported increased outside noise entering the living areas.

The client wanted an insulation upgrade that would solve all three issues: better energy efficiency, improved comfort, and sound reduction. They were specifically interested in dense pack cellulose insulation for its environmental benefits and high performance.

Another concern was noise during installation. The homeowner requested that the dense pack machine be brought inside the apartment to avoid bothering neighbors with exterior noise.

Our Solution:

Our team at Zavza Seal recommended dense pack cellulose insulation for three large exterior walls totaling approximately 275 square feet. The solution was structured in clear, efficient stages.

Step 1. Access Point Preparation

We drilled small access holes between the wall studs. This allowed us to fill the cavities without removing or damaging wall surfaces unnecessarily.

Step 2. Dense Pack Cellulose Installation

We used high quality, environmentally friendly cellulose insulation that is fire resistant and meets the Class 1 fire rating. Our technicians densely packed each cavity to achieve an R value of 14.

The dense pack method ensures the material is compressed enough to eliminate gaps and voids, which is essential for:

  • Improving thermal performance
  • Reducing outside noise
  • Increasing moisture resistance
  • Enhancing overall wall integrity

Per the homeowner’s request, our team brought the dense pack machine indoors to minimize external noise during the process.

Step 3. Patching and Finishing

Once insulation was installed, we patched all access holes, taped them, and applied joint compound for a smooth finish.

Optional finishing work included sanding and painting either the patched areas or the entire wall based on the homeowner’s preference and using their supplied paint.

Project Outcome:

The homeowners experienced immediate improvements after the installation:

  • Warmer, more comfortable interior temperatures
  • Lower heating usage
  • Significant outside noise reduction
  • A healthier indoor environment thanks to Gold Certified insulation

By using dense pack cellulose, the homeowner received a long term energy efficiency upgrade that was cost effective and environmentally responsible.
