Case Study: Downspout Drainage Fix for a Home in Huntington, NY

The Problem:

The homeowner in Huntington reached out to Zavza Seal after noticing water collecting around the foundation every time it rained. Three downspouts were emptying water too close to the house, soaking the soil and keeping the area around the foundation constantly wet.

Over time, this kind of water buildup can lead to serious problems like foundation stress, basement moisture, and soil erosion. The homeowner was concerned about long term damage and wanted a solution that would properly move water away from the home, not just push the problem a few feet further.

Our Assessment:

After visiting the property, our project manager walked the site and looked at how water was moving around the house. We checked the grading, nearby structures, and what might be buried underground.

Based on what we saw, we recommended extending all three downspouts underground and connecting them to a single drainage system that would carry water safely away from the foundation and into a dry well. To protect underground utilities and existing structures, all excavation was planned to be done carefully by hand.

The Solution:

Our crew got to work creating a drainage system designed to handle heavy rain and protect the home for the long term.

Here is what we did:

  • Carefully hand excavated to extend all three downspouts underground
  • Connected the downspouts using proper fittings so water flows smoothly
  • Interconnected all three downspouts into one underground system
  • Installed a 4 inch PVC drainage pipe to move water away from the house
  • Installed a 50 gallon dry well at least 12 feet away from the foundation
  • Added a popup emitter inside the dry well to release water safely

While working on site, our team also explored the option of releasing water to daylight instead of using a dry well. This depended on what obstacles were underground, such as pipes, cables, or concrete curbs. When a better or more efficient option was available, we discussed it directly with the homeowner before moving forward.

The Result:

Once the system was completed, rainwater was no longer pooling near the foundation. Water from the roof is now carried underground and released safely away from the home, keeping the soil around the foundation dry and stable.

The homeowner now has peace of mind knowing their drainage system is doing its job and their foundation is better protected from future water damage.

Why This Kind of Work Matters?

Poor downspout drainage is one of the most common reasons homeowners end up with foundation and basement water problems. When roof water is not directed far enough away, it slowly causes damage that often goes unnoticed until it becomes expensive.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency highlights proper stormwater management as an important step in preventing erosion and water damage around homes.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency also recommends directing water away from foundations to reduce flood related damage.

Why Homeowners Choose Zavza Seal?

At Zavza Seal, we focus on fixing the cause of the problem, not just the symptoms. Every property is different, which is why our team evaluates conditions on site and adjusts the plan when a better solution is available.

We believe good drainage is one of the most important steps in protecting a home, and we take the time to do it right.
