Case Study: Basement Waterproofing in Northport, NY

The Problem:

A homeowner in Northport, NY contacted Zavza Seal after noticing water damage in their finished basement. Water was coming into the finished room and the adjacent boiler room. The drywall was damp, and there were signs of efflorescence and mold along the wall and floor joint.

The issue was happening at the concrete floor and wall cove joint. This is a common weak point in many Long Island homes. Over time, water pressure from outside soil builds up and forces moisture into the basement.

The homeowner was worried about mold growth, structural damage, and damage to their finished space. They needed a long term waterproofing solution, not just a quick patch.

Our Solution:

At Zavza Seal, we focus on fixing the root cause of basement water intrusion. Here is how our team handled this waterproofing project in Northport.

Interior Basement Waterproofing Work

  1. Open Access to the Problem Area
  • We cut the drywall 24 inches above the floor along the entire 23 linear foot wall.
  • We removed the studs and baseplate to fully expose the concrete floor and wall joint.

This gave us clear access to the cove joint where the water was entering.

  1. Surface Preparation
  • We ground the wall 3 feet vertically and the floor 3 feet horizontally using a diamond blade.
  • This removed efflorescence, dirt, and mold.
  • Grinding exposed clean, original cement so our waterproofing materials could properly bond.

Proper preparation is one of the most important steps in any basement waterproofing project.

  1. Crack and Joint Injection
  • We injected the points of penetration with urethane and epoxy formulations.

Urethane helps seal active water leaks, while epoxy strengthens and bonds structural cracks. This combination provides both waterproofing and structural support.

  1. Basecrete Waterproofing System Installation
  • We applied one layer of Basecrete waterproofing cement to the prepared surface.
  • We installed reinforced 4.5 oz Basecrete fiberglass mesh along the entire length of the joint.
  • We applied a second layer of Basecrete waterproofing cement over the mesh.

This created a strong, flexible waterproof barrier at the wall and floor joint.

After completing the waterproofing, we installed new drywall that was taped and compounded. Sanding and painting were not included in this scope of work.

Exterior Drainage Improvements:

Waterproofing inside the basement is only part of the solution. We also corrected exterior conditions that were contributing to the problem.

  • We reset the concrete splash block at the rear of the home to improve water flow away from the foundation.
  • We installed an extension sleeve to the roof drain leader under the rear deck to carry water further from the house.
  • We demolished the bottom step at the stoop and installed a new concrete step.
  • We skim coated the riser and landing.
  • We installed new blue stone pavers at the landing and two new blue stone treads on the steps.

These improvements helped redirect rainwater away from the foundation and reduced hydrostatic pressure against the basement walls.

The Result:

After the repair:

  • The basement wall and floor joint were fully sealed.
  • Active water intrusion was stopped.
  • The finished room and boiler room were protected from future moisture damage.
  • Exterior drainage was improved to prevent recurring issues.

The homeowner now has a dry, protected basement and peace of mind during heavy rain.
