Case Study: Backyard Drainage Improvement in Centereach, NY

Project Overview

Our team at Zavza Seal completed a backyard drainage project in Centereach, NY. The goal was to move water away from the home and stop it from collecting near the foundation.

The Problem

The homeowner was dealing with water pooling in the backyard after rain. The existing drywells were not enough to handle the amount of water.

Over time, this water started to sit too close to the foundation wall. This can lead to moisture problems, basement leaks, and even long term damage to the structure.

The main issue was simple. Water was not draining far enough away from the house.

The Solution

We created a system that improves how water flows and drains on the property, while following proper stormwater management practices.

First, we added two new drywells that connect to the existing ones. This helps spread out the water and allows it to soak into the ground more effectively.

Next, we cut a trench about 20 feet long at ground level. This trench redirects water away from the home and toward the drywell system.

The design follows guidelines from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to ensure proper stormwater control. It also aligns with best practices supported by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for managing runoff and protecting foundations.

By combining added capacity with better water direction, the system now handles heavy rain much more efficiently.

The Result

After the work was completed, water no longer collects near the foundation. The backyard drains properly, even after strong rainfall.

The homeowner now has a safer and drier property. The risk of water damage to the foundation has been greatly reduced.

The system also supports long term soil stability by preventing oversaturation near the home.

Why This Matters

Poor drainage is one of the most common causes of foundation problems. When water sits near a home, it can slowly weaken the structure.

A proper drainage system moves water away and allows it to be absorbed safely into the ground. Following NYC DEP stormwater guidelines ensures the system is both effective and environmentally responsible.
