Case Study: Basement and Crawl Space Insulation in East Hampton, NY

Project Overview

Our team at Zavza Seal completed a full insulation upgrade for a home in East Hampton, NY. The project covered the basement walls, basement ceiling, rim joists, crawl space ceiling, and one exterior wall on the first floor.

The goal was simple. Make the home more energy efficient, reduce outside noise, and improve overall comfort.

The Problem

The homeowner was facing a few common issues that many homes in East Hampton deal with.

The basement felt cold and damp, especially during colder months. This usually happens when walls and ceilings are not properly insulated.

The crawl space was also losing heat, which made the floors above feel cold. Rim joists were exposed, allowing air leaks and moisture to enter.

There was also poor insulation in the exterior wall at the back of the first floor. This caused uneven temperatures inside the home.

Overall, the house was losing energy, which can lead to higher utility bills and less comfort.

The Solution

We created a complete insulation plan to fix all these issues properly.

First, we installed point bonded non woven netting across all the areas. This helps hold the insulation in place and ensures full coverage.

We then used dense packed cellulose insulation throughout the project.

  • Basement walls were insulated to an R value of 19
  • Basement ceiling and crawl space ceiling were insulated to an R value of 38
  • Rim joists were also insulated to an R value of 38 to stop air leaks
  • The exterior wall was insulated to an R value of 21 by cutting small access ports, blowing in insulation, then sealing and finishing the surface

This method ensures that every gap and cavity is fully filled, which improves energy performance and comfort.

The insulation we used is environmentally friendly and safe. It is fire resistant with a Class 1 fire rating. It also helps reduce outside noise, resist moisture, and improve indoor air quality.

The Result

After the project was completed, the difference was clear.

The home now holds heat much better, especially in the basement and crawl space areas. Floors feel warmer and the temperature is more consistent throughout the house.

Air leaks have been sealed, which helps reduce energy loss. This can lead to lower heating and cooling costs over time.

The added sound absorption also made the home quieter and more comfortable.

Overall, the home is now more energy efficient, healthier, and more comfortable to live in.

Why This Matters

Proper insulation is one of the most important parts of a healthy home. Without it, energy is lost, moisture can build up, and comfort is reduced.

Dense packed cellulose is a strong solution because it fills gaps completely and provides long lasting performance.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, proper insulation can significantly improve energy efficiency and reduce utility costs.
