Case Study: Backyard Dry Well Installation in Brooklyn, NY
Completed backyard dry well installation in Brooklyn NY with reinforced concrete surface, cast iron dome grate drain, and underground stormwater management system.

The Problem

A homeowner in Brooklyn was dealing with poor drainage in the backyard. After heavy rain, water would collect on the surface and take a long time to drain away. Standing water can create muddy areas, damage concrete surfaces, and increase the risk of water finding its way toward the foundation.

The homeowner wanted a long-term drainage solution that would handle large amounts of rainwater and help keep the backyard dry.

Our Solution

After evaluating the property, our team recommended installing a large underground dry well system designed to collect and disperse excess stormwater safely into the surrounding soil.

We began by saw-cutting and removing the existing concrete in the designated work area. Once access was created, we carefully excavated the site to accommodate a dry well measuring approximately 80 inches long, 80 inches wide, and 44 inches deep. This system provides roughly 1,200 gallons of water storage capacity.

To create a strong and stable base, we installed a steel wire reinforced concrete footing around the perimeter. A 12-inch layer of clean gravel was then placed inside the footing to promote proper drainage.

Next, we constructed durable cinder block walls and completed the dry well structure. The system was covered with a reinforced concrete slab designed to direct water toward a heavy-duty cast iron dome grate drain. This type of drain helps prevent leaves, dirt, and debris from clogging the drainage system while providing long-lasting performance.

Finally, we finished the concrete surface to blend with the surrounding area and restore the backyard’s appearance.

The Result

The homeowner now has a reliable underground drainage system that captures and manages excess rainwater before it can collect on the property. The backyard drains more efficiently, reducing the risk of standing water and helping protect nearby structures from moisture-related issues.

The completed dry well provides a durable, low-maintenance solution designed to perform for decades.

Why Dry Wells Are Important

Dry wells are one of the most effective ways to manage stormwater on residential properties. They collect excess water and allow it to slowly seep back into the ground, helping to reduce flooding, surface water buildup, and drainage problems.

For homeowners experiencing recurring water issues, a properly designed dry well can provide a long-term solution while protecting the value of the property.

Warranty

This project was completed with a 40-Year Warranty, giving the homeowner added confidence that the drainage system will continue to perform as intended for many years to come.
