Case Study: Basement Joint and Corrugated Steel Repair in Woodside, NY
Repaired and waterproofed basement wall and ceiling joints in Woodside NY

The Problem:

A property in Woodside, NY had damaged and rusted corrugated steel plates along the basement wall and ceiling joints. The existing steel support also had to be removed so the damaged areas could be properly accessed.

The rusted corrugated plates were covering portions of the wall and ceiling joints. This made it difficult to inspect and prepare the joints for further repair work.

The property also had spray foam around sections of the basement joints. The existing material needed to be removed so the concrete and steel underneath could be properly prepared.

The Solution:

Zavza Seal started by removing the steel bolts that secured the hot rolled right-angle steel support to the corrugated steel plates. Once the bolts were removed, the right-angle support could be taken out.

Our team then cut and removed a 6-inch-wide strip of damaged and rusted corrugated steel along one wall and ceiling joint. This section was approximately 6 linear feet long.

An additional 6-inch-wide strip of damaged and rusted corrugated steel, approximately 4 linear feet long, was removed along another wall and ceiling joint.

Removing these damaged sections exposed the joints and allowed the areas to be properly accessed for the next stage of repair.

For the basement joint waterproofing areas, the existing spray foam was removed. The exposed joints were ground with diamond blades to remove loose material and expose the underlying concrete and steel. Sealants and adhesives were then applied as needed.

The waterproofing system included Basecrete waterproofing cement and reinforced 4.5 oz fiberglass mesh. A first coat of Basecrete was applied, followed by the reinforced mesh and a second coat of Basecrete to complete the waterproofing treatment.

The exterior perimeter also included approximately 40 linear feet on the south side of the property, where waterproofing materials were to be applied as needed.

Result:

The damaged and rusted corrugated steel was removed from the affected basement joints, giving the repair team access to the areas that needed attention. The wall and ceiling joints were also prepared for waterproofing using Basecrete and reinforced fiberglass mesh.

This project helped address damaged steel, exposed the affected basement joints, and provided a more durable waterproofing treatment for the areas included in the scope.

About the Sidewalk Work

The project documents also noted several sunken sidewalk slabs and proposed mudjacking as an optional solution. Because this work was listed as optional, I would not include it as completed work in the case study unless you confirm that Zavza Seal actually performed the mudjacking.
