Attic Insulation Upgrade in Bronx, NY
Project Overview
A homeowner in the Bronx reached out to Zavza Seal because their home was difficult to keep comfortable throughout the year. During the winter, the second floor felt cold even when the heating system was running. In the summer, the upper level became excessively hot, making it harder to maintain a consistent indoor temperature.
Our inspection focused on the attic crawl space above the second-floor ceiling. We found that the area either had little insulation or not enough insulation to properly protect the home from heat loss and heat gain.
The Problem
The attic is one of the most important areas for maintaining a home’s energy efficiency. Without enough insulation, warm air escapes during the winter while heat from the roof enters the home during the summer.
In this Bronx home, the attic crawl space measured approximately 465 square feet. The existing insulation was either missing or no longer providing the level of protection needed for year-round comfort.
As a result, the homeowner experienced:
- Uneven temperatures between floors.
- Higher heating and cooling costs.
- Reduced indoor comfort throughout the year.
- A home that was less energy efficient than it could be.
The homeowner wanted a long-term solution that would improve comfort while helping reduce energy waste.
Our Solution
After inspecting the attic crawl space, the Zavza Seal team designed an insulation plan to maximize energy efficiency while working within the existing attic space.
Step 1: Accessing the Attic Crawl Space
Our crew accessed the attic through a newly created access hatch. We carefully opened the wall of the roof chase to allow insulation to reach every part of the attic, including areas that are normally difficult to access.
This approach helped ensure complete insulation coverage throughout the crawl space.
Step 2: Installing Blown-In Cellulose Insulation
We installed environmentally friendly blown-in cellulose insulation across the entire attic crawl space.
Because attic height varies from one end to the other, we adjusted the insulation depth to provide the appropriate level of thermal protection.
- Areas with limited space received insulation with a minimum R-35 value.
- Areas with greater attic depth received insulation up to R-45.
This created a more consistent thermal barrier across the attic while improving the home’s overall energy performance.
Step 3: Building a New Access Door
Once the insulation was installed, our team built a new attic access door to help keep the cellulose insulation in place and maintain the effectiveness of the installation.
Step 4: Using High-Performance Insulation Materials
The cellulose insulation selected for this project offers several long-term benefits.
It is made from environmentally friendly materials, provides excellent thermal performance, helps reduce outside noise, resists moisture, and meets a Class 1 fire rating. It is also Gold Certified, helping contribute to a healthier indoor environment.
The Result
The homeowner now has a properly insulated attic that helps maintain more comfortable indoor temperatures throughout the year.
The new insulation creates a stronger thermal barrier between the living space and the attic, helping reduce unwanted heat transfer during both hot summers and cold winters.
The homeowner can also expect improved energy efficiency, lower heating and cooling costs over time, and a quieter home thanks to the sound-absorbing properties of the cellulose insulation.
Most importantly, the insulation upgrade was completed without major disruption to the home while providing long-term performance and comfort.
