Solving Yard Flooding and Poor Drainage with a Custom Dry Well System
The Problem
A homeowner in Long Island was dealing with serious drainage problems after heavy rainstorms. Water would collect in the backyard and remain there for days. The standing water made the yard difficult to use and created concerns about soil erosion, mosquito activity, and excess moisture near the home’s foundation.
The property’s existing drainage system could not handle the amount of runoff generated during storms. As a result, rainwater had nowhere to go and repeatedly pooled in low areas of the yard.
The homeowner contacted Zavza Seal looking for a long-term drainage solution that would safely collect and disperse excess water underground.
Our Inspection
After evaluating the property, our team determined that the best solution would be a large-capacity dry well system designed to capture stormwater and allow it to gradually infiltrate into the surrounding soil.
We developed a custom drainage plan that would provide sufficient storage capacity while protecting the surrounding landscape and foundation.
The Solution
Zavza Seal installed a professionally engineered dry well system consisting of:
- Excavation of the designated installation area
- Installation of a reinforced concrete foundation
- Construction of an approximately 80-inch by 80-inch dry well structure
- Installation of durable concrete block walls
- Placement of a large gravel bed to improve water dispersion
- Connection of a 4-inch drainage pipe to direct runoff into the system
- Installation of deep vertical infiltration pipes to increase drainage capacity
- Construction of a reinforced concrete cover slab for durability and safety
- Final grading and site restoration
The gravel-filled chamber allows stormwater to enter the dry well and slowly infiltrate into the surrounding soil. The deep infiltration pipes help move water into lower soil layers, improving drainage performance even during periods of heavy rainfall.

Why This Dry Well System Works
Unlike temporary drainage fixes, a properly designed dry well addresses the root cause of water accumulation.
Benefits of the Installation
- Reduces standing water in the yard
- Helps protect the home’s foundation from excess moisture
- Improves overall property drainage
- Reduces soil erosion
- Helps prevent muddy conditions after rain
- Minimizes mosquito breeding areas
- Provides a long-lasting underground drainage solution
The reinforced concrete construction and high-capacity design ensure that the system can withstand years of use while continuing to manage stormwater effectively.
The Result
After the installation was completed, the homeowner immediately noticed improved drainage performance. Rainwater that previously collected on the surface was now being directed into the dry well system where it could safely disperse underground.
The backyard became more usable, cleaner, and better protected from future water-related issues. Most importantly, the homeowner gained peace of mind knowing that the drainage problem had been addressed with a permanent solution rather than a temporary fix.
