Our team at Zavza Seal worked on a basement project in Flushing, NY where a home needed proper structural support. The goal was simple. Make the beam safe again and stop any future damage.
The Problem
The homeowner reached out after noticing signs that something was not right in the basement. A support column that used to hold up a beam had been removed in the past.
Without that column, the beam was left carrying weight on its own. Over time, this can cause the beam to sag or even crack. It also puts stress on the floors above.
The home was still standing, but it was missing an important support point. That needed to be fixed before it turned into a bigger and more expensive problem.
The Solution
We started by opening the drywall to expose the wood beam. We also opened the floor below so we could reach the concrete base where the new support would sit.
Once everything was visible, we installed a 4 inch adjustable steel column with a 29,000 pound capacity right under the beam. This column now carries the load that the beam should not handle alone.
To make sure the fit was tight and secure, we used hydraulic jacks to slowly lift the beam into position. After that, we locked the column in place by fastening the top and bottom plates.
We also checked the beam carefully for cracks. If we had found any damage, we were ready to reinforce it with steel plates to make it stronger.
The Result
After the work was done, the beam was properly supported again. The structure of the home is now stable and safe.
The homeowner no longer has to worry about the beam sagging or causing damage over time. The basement now has the support it was missing.
Why This Matters
Problems like this often go unnoticed until they get worse. Fixing them early can save a lot of money and stress.
Building standards from the International Code Council also stress the need for correct load support in homes.
This project focused only on adding proper support to the beam. It did not include fixing or leveling the floor above. If deeper damage is found in a structure, extra reinforcement may sometimes be needed.
