Case Study: Basement Waterproofing and Restoration in Huntington, NY

The Problem:

A homeowner in Huntington was dealing with ongoing basement water intrusion and moisture damage. Water had started affecting the foundation walls, drywall, and finished basement areas. Over time, the moisture caused peeling surfaces, mold concerns, damaged drywall, and deterioration around several parts of the basement.

The homeowner wanted a long term waterproofing solution that would not only stop water from entering the basement but also restore the damaged interior areas.

Exterior Foundation Waterproofing

The first part of the project focused on the exterior foundation walls below grade near the problem areas.

Our team at Zavza Seal excavated approximately 8 feet down to the bottom of the foundation footing. Once the foundation walls were fully exposed, we steel brushed and cleaned the surface to remove debris, loose material, and damaged areas.

We repaired all visible cracks and holes using Basecrete waterproofing cement before applying liquid rubber waterproofing protection. After that, we installed a waterproofing membrane across the repaired sections to create a strong moisture barrier.

To strengthen the connection between the foundation walls and footing, we reinforced the joint areas using 4.5 oz fiberglass mesh together with liquid rubber and waterproof membrane protection. Brick sections were also repointed where necessary to improve durability and appearance.

We used Basecrete Waterproofing Products because they are designed for high performance waterproofing and long term moisture protection.

Interior Basement Waterproofing

In addition to the exterior work, the basement walls also needed interior waterproofing and restoration.

We removed damaged drywall and cleared the affected wall areas to expose the original concrete surface underneath. The walls were then ground down to remove paint, mold, old tar, and efflorescence so the waterproofing products could properly bond to the concrete.

Once the surface was fully prepared, we applied Intercept waterproofing treatment to penetrate deep into the concrete structure and fill microscopic voids inside the wall system. After that, we applied two layers of Basecrete waterproofing across the entire basement wall area for long term protection.

To keep dust and debris contained during the process, our team sealed the work area with floor to ceiling plastic protection before beginning the grinding and waterproofing work.

Drywall and Basement Restoration

After the waterproofing was completed, we restored the finished basement areas.

Our team installed new drywall, taped the seams, spackled, sanded, primed, and painted the walls to give the basement a clean finished appearance.

We also repaired lower wall cut areas, installed tile sections, added molding, and restored damaged ceiling drywall sections in multiple basement areas including the laundromat section.

Additional painting was completed across continuous wall sections to help the basement maintain a consistent finished appearance.

Basement Floor Tile Installation

The homeowner also wanted to improve the basement flooring. To complete the renovation, we installed new ceramic tile over the existing basement tile using a bonding installation method for strong adhesion and durability.

This helped modernize the basement while creating a cleaner and more durable floor surface.

Mold Resistant Drywall and Finishing Work

Several drywall sections damaged by water were replaced with mold resistant drywall to help improve long term protection.

We also treated the affected areas with a professional disinfectant mold treatment that is highly effective while remaining non-irritating and odorless. After repairs were completed, the walls were patched, sanded, primed with anti mold primer, and painted.

To complete the project, we also painted doors, molding, trim, columns, and built in shelving with a semi gloss white finish for a refreshed appearance.

The Final Result:

After the project was completed, the basement was fully waterproofed, restored, and refinished. The homeowner now has a cleaner, brighter, and more protected basement space with improved resistance against future moisture intrusion.

Most importantly, the waterproofing system helped address both the exterior and interior sources of water penetration, giving the homeowner long term peace of mind.

Why Basement Waterproofing Matters?

According to The National Institute of Building Sciences, moisture control is one of the most important factors in protecting a building from long term structural damage.

The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors (InterNACHI) also explains that basement moisture problems can lead to mold growth, indoor air quality concerns, and deterioration of finished surfaces if left untreated.
