Location: Brooklyn, NY
Project Area: Air space between the top floor ceiling and the flat roof (approx. 850 sq. ft.)
Client Observation
The client approached us with concerns about uneven indoor temperatures, particularly in the top floor of their building. During summer, the space became uncomfortably hot, while in winter, heating costs were skyrocketing despite constant use of the HVAC system. They suspected inadequate insulation between the top floor ceiling and the flat roof, which was causing heat loss and gain.
Diagnosis by Our Team
Upon inspection, our team confirmed that the air space between the top floor ceiling and the flat roof lacked sufficient insulation. This void was allowing heat to escape in winter and penetrate in summer, leading to energy inefficiency and discomfort.
We determined that the best solution to enhance the thermal performance of the building was to install blown-in cellulose insulation. This method would ensure thorough coverage of the air space while achieving the desired insulation standards.
Solution Implemented
To address the client’s concerns, we proposed and executed the following:
- Accessing the Air Space:
We gained entry to the insulation area through the opening above the staircase, ensuring minimal disruption to the existing structure. - Blowing In Cellulose Insulation:
Using specialized equipment, we installed 14 inches of cellulose insulation into the 850 sq. ft. air space. This thickness was calculated to achieve an R-value of 49, meeting the Department of Energy’s recommendations for the region. - Ensuring Comprehensive Coverage:
Our team carefully distributed the insulation to eliminate gaps, ensuring even coverage and maximum thermal performance. - Final Inspection:
Once the insulation was installed, we performed a thorough inspection to confirm the R-value and assess the uniformity of the insulation.
Outcome
The installation successfully resolved the client’s concerns:
- Energy Efficiency: The building’s thermal performance improved significantly, reducing heating and cooling costs.
- Comfort: The top floor now maintains consistent indoor temperatures throughout the year.
- Sustainability: Cellulose insulation, being eco-friendly and made from recycled materials, added value to the client’s property.
The client expressed satisfaction with the results, noting a noticeable difference in indoor comfort within weeks of the installation.
Why Choose Blown-In Cellulose Insulation?
- High R-Value: Provides excellent thermal resistance.
- Eco-Friendly: Made from recycled materials.
- Cost-Effective: Reduces energy bills by improving insulation efficiency.
- Non-Invasive: Can be installed without major structural changes.
