Case Study: Attic Floor Insulation Upgrade and Energy Efficiency Improvement in Richmond Hill, NY

The Problem:

A homeowner in Richmond Hill, NY contacted Zavza Seal after experiencing water damage in two separate ceiling areas and ongoing concerns about poor insulation performance in the attic. The existing attic floor insulation consisted of aging fiberglass batts, some of which were sagging and hanging from the roof rafters. This condition reduced energy efficiency, allowed air leakage, and contributed to inconsistent indoor comfort.

Approximately 20 percent of the attic floor was covered with wood planks used for storage, with personal belongings placed on top. The homeowner wanted to improve insulation without disturbing stored items while also receiving a professional assessment and estimate for addressing moisture related concerns.

The attic needed a clean, efficient, and environmentally responsible insulation solution that would maximize thermal performance and improve overall home comfort.

The Solution:

Zavza Seal proposed a targeted attic insulation upgrade using loose fill cellulose to improve energy efficiency while working carefully around existing attic storage.

Attic Floor Insulation Scope of Work:

Our team completed the project using the following approach:

  • Left the existing wood covered attic floor sections in place and organized stored homeowner belongings into small piles
  • Covered stored items with plastic sheeting to protect them during installation
  • Removed all existing fiberglass batt insulation from the attic floor
  • Cleaned up hanging fiberglass insulation from the roof rafters and disposed of it properly
  • Preserved existing cellulose insulation already in place where applicable
  • Installed loose fill cellulose insulation over the attic floor to maximize coverage and performance
  • Blew in cellulose insulation to achieve an overall R value of 38 for improved thermal resistance

The loose fill method ensured consistent insulation depth, reduced air movement, and improved moisture resistance throughout the attic floor.

Materials and Performance Benefits:

The insulation material used by Zavza Seal offers multiple long term benefits:

  • Environmentally friendly and fire resistant
  • Meets Class 1 fire rating standards
  • Helps reduce outside noise transmission
  • Provides resistance to moisture and water vapor
  • Improves indoor comfort and overall energy efficiency
  • Gold Certified insulation contributing to a healthier indoor environment

This approach allowed the homeowner to improve attic performance without major disruption or removal of existing storage areas.

The Result:

After completion, the attic in this Richmond Hill home achieved a significantly higher insulation value, improved temperature consistency, and better protection against air leakage and moisture movement. The upgraded insulation helps reduce heating and cooling costs while supporting a more comfortable and energy efficient living space.

The homeowner received a clean, organized installation and a clear understanding of future waterproofing options related to the ceiling water damage.

Why This Project Matters?

In many New York homes, outdated or poorly installed attic insulation leads to energy loss, moisture problems, and rising utility bills. Proper attic insulation is one of the most effective ways to improve comfort, efficiency, and long term home performance.

Zavza Seal specializes in insulation solutions that are practical, safe, and built for real world conditions.
