The Problem
A homeowner in the Bronx, NY reached out to Zavza Seal to assist with transforming their 430-square-foot basement room into a clean, usable space. The concrete slab in the basement had damaged, loose materials and needed a stable, waterproof surface to support large-format floor tile installation.
Due to the potential for ground moisture and soil gases entering the basement, a moisture barrier and waterproofing system was also essential. The customer wanted to supply their own materials but needed expert labor to ensure proper surface preparation, waterproofing, and precise tile work.
Our Solution
Zavza Seal provided full-service labor and equipment to handle the surface preparation, waterproofing, and tile installation. Our team followed industry-best practices to ensure a durable, moisture-resistant, and long-lasting tile floor.
Step-by-Step Process
1. Surface Preparation
- The customer chipped and removed all loose and damaged materials from the basement floor prior to our team’s arrival.
- Zavza Seal technicians abraded and cleaned the exposed concrete slab, removing dust, residue, and debris to prepare for mortar application.
- The slab was lightly dampened with water to activate the bonding agent in the mortar for optimal adhesion.
2. Mortar and Waterproofing Layer
- A layer of mortar was applied evenly over the prepared surface.
- On top of the mortar, we installed Thinset, followed by a Schluter-DITRA Uncoupling and Waterproofing Membrane. This membrane is engineered to:
Prevent cracking and shifting of tiles
Act as a vapor barrier to block moisture and soil gases from entering the living space
Ensure long-term tile stability
3. Tile Installation and Grouting
- After the membrane was set, a second layer of Thinset was applied.
- Our team installed the customer-provided large-format tiles across the entire 430 sq. ft. surface.
- Once the tiles were installed and cured, we completed the project by grouting the joints and cleaning the tile surface to deliver a polished, professional result.

The Result

The concrete slab was expertly prepped to ensure a solid base for tile installation.
