Town/Neighborhood: Hempstead
Borough/County: Nassau County
Construction Type: Residential
Category: Basement Waterproofing, Foundation Wall Sealing
Problem
The homeowner in Hempstead, NY reported active water intrusion in the basement, specifically beneath the exterior stairwell. Over time, the two affected foundation walls had begun to show signs of water damage, including surface degradation and increased moisture buildup. The infiltration posed a risk to the structural integrity of the walls, as well as the overall usability of the basement. The client requested both an immediate waterproofing solution and a preliminary assessment for future basement finishing.
Solution
Our Zavza Seal team conducted a thorough inspection of the affected basement walls and proposed a comprehensive waterproofing plan covering approximately 52 linear feet of wall and 364 square feet of surface area.
Step 1: Cove Joint Grinding and Basecrete Application
We began by grinding the wall-to-floor cove joint using a diamond blade. The grinding was done vertically 3 inches on the wall and horizontally 3 inches on the floor to create a clean, prepared channel for waterproofing application.
We installed 4.5 oz mesh-reinforced Basecrete waterproof cement continuously along the entire cove joint for both walls. This mesh-reinforced solution enhances adhesion, flexibility, and long-term performance under hydrostatic pressure.
Step 2: Full Wall Scarification and Waterproof Cement Coating
Next, our team scarified the full surface of both basement walls to remove all loose and deteriorating material. This step ensures proper bonding and prevents future delamination of the waterproofing layer.
We applied Basecrete waterproof cement coating from top to bottom across both walls, covering a total area of 364 square feet. This cementitious waterproofing system creates a seamless barrier to block moisture penetration while reinforcing the substrate.
Additional Notes
During the project, our team also identified water intrusion originating from underneath the exterior stairs, as initially reported by the homeowner. We carefully removed damaged lumber in the area to investigate the source of penetration. This discovery will allow for a more accurate scope of work and cost estimate for further structural repair or replacement as needed.
As part of our commitment to complete basement solutions, we also discussed a future basement finishing project with the client. A separate cost proposal and design consultation will be arranged in a follow-up onsite meeting.

Results
The project successfully sealed the affected basement walls, restoring both functionality and structural protection to the home in Hempstead, NY. The mesh-reinforced Basecrete application ensures long-term waterproofing performance, and our diagnostic efforts helped the client understand underlying issues near the exterior stairwell.
