Case Study: Brooklyn, NY Foundation Wall Repair and Bay Window Insulation Project

Town/Neighborhood: Brooklyn
Borough/County: Kings County
Construction Type: Residential
Category: Foundation Repair, Foundation Wall Restoration, Home Insulation

Problem

The homeowner contacted us regarding concerns about the stability and insulation of their property. The foundation walls required reinforcement to ensure long-term structural integrity, while the wall surrounding the bay window suffered from poor insulation, resulting in significant energy loss and reduced indoor comfort. The homeowner wanted a comprehensive solution to address both the structural and thermal performance issues.

Solution

Work Area A: Foundation Wall Restoration
We began by assessing the entire perimeter of the basement foundation to identify vulnerable areas. For sections requiring reinforcement, we excavated to the appropriate depth to access the wall and footing. We tampered the soil firmly and installed #5 rebar every 15 inches, driving them 5 feet into the soil for additional stability. Continuous horizontal reinforcement was placed along the entire length of the footing. We then formed a new reinforced concrete footing measuring 24 inches deep by 18 inches wide, poured with 4,000 PSI concrete to ensure durability. This phased approach prevented any undermining of the home’s structural integrity.

Work Area B: Bay Window and PTAC Side Wall Insulation
To address the insulation problem, we created access ports in the wall surrounding the bay window and the perpendicular side wall to the left of the PTAC unit. Using dense-packed cellulose insulation, we filled every void and gap within the wall cavity. This insulation method, combined with the existing spray foam insulation, achieved a minimum R-Value of 21. Once complete, we patched the access ports, taped, and applied compound for a seamless finish.

Our cellulose insulation is environmentally friendly, Class 1 fire-rated, moisture-resistant, and provides excellent sound absorption. This upgrade significantly improved the home’s energy efficiency, reduced noise infiltration, and created a healthier indoor environment.

Conclusion

This Brooklyn, NY project not only strengthened the foundation walls but also enhanced the home’s comfort and energy efficiency through professional insulation. By addressing both structural and insulation needs, we ensured that the property remains safe, stable, and efficient for years to come.
