Over time, the structural posts supporting the carport had weakened, leading to noticeable sagging and instability. Solution

Carport Structural Support and Releveling

  • Excavation for Footings: We excavated to install two new rebar-reinforced concrete footings, each measuring approximately 24” wide × 24” long × 24” deep, at the base of the sagging carport columns.
  • Temporary Shoring: Temporary shoring was put in place to support the carport roof during excavation and footing installation.
  • Post Replacement: We installed two new 6×6 pressure-treated wood posts, anchored securely to the freshly poured footings, providing solid structural support.
  • Releveling Efforts: While full leveling could not be guaranteed due to the age and wear of the structure, we made best efforts to relevel the carport, resulting in significant improvement and enhanced stability.

Downspout Extension and Drywell Installation

To address the drainage problem and protect the structure from water damage, our team implemented the following:

  • Downspout Modifications: We disconnected and modified two existing downspouts located at the corners of the carport.
  • Extension and Routing: Using fittings and adapters, we extended the downspouts down to grade and below.
  • Trenching for Drainage: Trenches were excavated to route both downspouts to a single drainage point along the side of the carport.
  • Drywell Installation: We installed a 55-gallon drywell on a 6-inch bed of compacted gravel to manage water runoff efficiently.
  • PVC Connection: A 4” solid PVC pipe was installed below grade to connect the downspouts to the drywell.
  • Overflow Control: A pop-up emitter was added to release overflow water during unusually heavy rain.

Results

The Lynbrook homeowner now has a structurally stable carport with reinforced support columns and a significantly improved roof alignment. The newly installed drainage system successfully redirects rainwater away from the structure, reducing the risk of erosion, foundation damage, and standing water.
