The Problem:
A homeowner in East Moriches, NY contacted Zavza Seal because the concrete slab in their home was damaged and no longer stable.
The slab had visible deterioration and was supporting a wooden platform and finished sheetrock walls and ceiling. Over time, moisture and ground movement caused the concrete to weaken. The slab was no longer a safe or reliable surface.
If the slab was not replaced correctly, the homeowner risked:
- Cracking and uneven floors
- Moisture problems
- Future structural damage
- Costly repairs later on
This project required a full slab removal and proper rebuild, not a surface patch.
The Solution:
Zavza Seal created a step-by-step plan to remove the damaged slab and install a strong, long lasting concrete foundation.
Step 1: Demolition and Removal
We safely removed and disposed of:
- The wooden platform
- Sheetrock ceiling and walls, approximately 70 square feet each
- The existing damaged concrete slab
This allowed us full access to the ground below.
Step 2: Excavation
We excavated the area to a depth of approximately 10 inches. All soil and debris were removed and properly disposed of.
Step 3: Soil Compaction
Using a commercial grade compactor, we compacted the soil to create a stable base. Proper compaction is critical to prevent future settling and cracking.
Step 4: Sub Base Installation
We installed a 3 inch layer of crushed stone over the compacted soil. This layer allows proper drainage under the slab and helps prevent moisture related cracking over time.
The crushed stone sub base was then compacted thoroughly.
Step 5: New Concrete Slab Installation
On top of the prepared base, we installed:
- A 7 inch thick concrete slab
- Steel wire reinforcement
- 4,000 PSI high strength concrete
The concrete was carefully finished to complete the surface.
The Result:
- The old, damaged slab was fully removed
- The ground below was properly prepared and stabilized
- A strong, reinforced concrete slab was installed
- Drainage under the slab was improved
- The homeowner now has a safe, durable, and long lasting concrete surface
This new slab is built to handle moisture, weight, and ground movement common in Long Island homes.
