Case Study: Crawl Space Insulation to Optimize Comfort
A dirty crawl space with cold drafts

Client Observation:

A homeowner in Oceanside, New York, expressed concerns about inconsistent and uncomfortable temperatures in their home. During the summer months, the house felt uncomfortably warm, while the winter months brought a noticeable chill. The homeowner suspected the crawl space might be contributing to the issue, as it remained cold and drafty.

Diagnosis:

The Zavza Seal LLC team conducted a comprehensive inspection of the Oceanside property, including the crawl space. Using thermal imaging cameras, they identified significant heat loss through the crawl space walls and ceiling. This was likely due to insufficient or outdated insulation, allowing conditioned air to escape and untreated outdoor air to enter the home.

Solution:

To address the heat loss and create a more comfortable and energy-efficient living environment, Zavza Seal LLC proposed a crawl space insulation solution. The plan included:

  • Existing Insulation Removal: As a first step, the team would remove and dispose of any existing insulation materials present in the crawl space. This ensures a clean and efficient application of the new insulation.
  • Perimeter Wall Insulation: To prevent heat loss through the crawl space walls, Zavza Seal LLC would install 3-inch thick rigid Styrofoam boards. These boards would be mechanically secured to the concrete walls around the entire perimeter of the crawl space. Additionally, waterproof adhesive would be used to ensure a tight seal between the Styrofoam boards, minimizing air infiltration.
  • Ceiling Insulation: For optimal insulation coverage, Zavza Seal LLC would install a point-bonded non-woven netting on the crawl space ceiling. This netting would act as a containment layer for the cellulose insulation that would be blown in afterwards.
  • Dense-Packed Cellulose Insulation: Dense-packed cellulose insulation would be blown into the crawl space ceiling cavity, covering the entire designated area (approximately 390 square feet). This eco-friendly and cost-effective insulation material offers excellent thermal resistance. Zavza Seal LLC would ensure the cellulose insulation achieves an R-value of 30, significantly improving the crawl space’s thermal performance.

Expected Outcome:

By implementing the proposed crawl space insulation solution, Zavza Seal LLC aimed to create a more controlled and comfortable living environment for the Oceanside homeowner. The combination of rigid Styrofoam board insulation on the walls and dense-packed cellulose insulation on the ceiling significantly reduced heat loss through the crawl space. This resulted in more consistent and comfortable indoor temperatures throughout the year, along with the potential for reduced energy bills due to improved home energy efficiency.

Addendum: Subject Area – Crawl Space

It’s important to note that the scope of this project encompassed the entirety of the crawl space (approximately 390 square feet), including both the walls and ceiling. This comprehensive approach ensures optimal insulation coverage and maximizes the crawl space’s thermal performance, leading to a more comfortable and energy-efficient home.
