Case Study: First Floor Apartment Ceiling Insulation for Energy Efficiency and Noise Reduction in Brooklyn, NY

Problem:

A property owner in Brooklyn, NY was experiencing heat loss and unwanted noise transfer between a basement apartment and the first floor living space. The first floor apartment included three bedrooms, a living area, a bathroom, and a kitchen, covering approximately 635 square feet. The ceiling lacked sufficient insulation, leading to higher energy costs, temperature inconsistencies, and noticeable sound transmission between floors. The goal was to improve energy efficiency and comfort while minimizing disruption to the finished space.

Solution:

Zavza Seal proposed a targeted insulation strategy designed to maximize performance while preserving the existing ceiling finishes.

Our team completed the project as follows:

  • Created precise access holes between ceiling joists throughout the first floor apartment ceiling.
  • Blew in dense packed cellulose insulation to achieve an approximate R value of 15 across the entire ceiling area.
  • Focused on consistent coverage to reduce thermal loss and limit sound vibration between floors.
  • Patched, taped, and compounded all access ports after insulation was complete.
  • Left the ceiling smooth and ready for paint, with minimal visual impact.

The cellulose insulation used is environmentally friendly, Gold Certified, fire resistant, and meets a Class 1 fire rating. It also provides moisture resistance, excellent sound absorbency, and contributes to a healthier indoor environment.

Results:

After completion, the homeowner saw improved temperature stability throughout the first floor apartment and reduced energy loss between floors. Sound transfer was softened, creating a quieter and more comfortable living environment. While soundproofing results can vary due to building structure and noise sources, the insulation significantly improved overall comfort and efficiency.

Important Note on Sound Reduction:

Soundproofing is part science and part art, and noise perception varies from person to person. Sound can originate from multiple internal and external sources, and while insulation reduces sound vibrations and wave transmission, it cannot guarantee complete noise elimination. Zavza Seal committed to using best practices and proven materials to achieve the best possible outcome for this space.

Why This Matters in Brooklyn, NY?

Multi unit homes in Brooklyn often struggle with energy loss and noise between floors. Proper ceiling insulation is a practical and effective way to improve comfort, reduce energy consumption, and enhance everyday living without major renovations.
