The Problem: Rusted Metalwork, Damaged Window Frame, and Unstable Posts
A homeowner in Brooklyn, NY reached out to Zavza Seal to address several structural and cosmetic issues around their property. The front metal fencing and stair railings had become rusty and worn over time, diminishing the home’s curb appeal and risking further deterioration. The basement window bars also showed signs of rust and needed a fresh protective coating.
Additionally, the homeowner reported difficulty closing a window due to frame warping, as well as unstable gate and stair posts that moved when used. There was also concern about potential mold in the window frame caused by water damage.
These combined issues required a professional, detailed solution that improved both the functionality and appearance of the property.
The Solution: Comprehensive Repairs and Painting by Zavza Seal
Our team at Zavza Seal provided a complete repair and restoration package, addressing each area of concern with precision and care.
Metal Fencing, Stair Railings, and Basement Window Bars
We began by preparing the front metal fencing, the fence between 576 and 578, the stair railings, and the basement window bars. This included:
- Trimming vegetation to allow access to all areas.
- Grinding and steel-brushing all exposed metal surfaces to remove rust and expose clean, bare metal.
- Applying a coat of Rust-Oleum rusty metal primer to protect against future corrosion.
- Applying a final coat of Rust-Oleum enamel paint for a durable, attractive finish.
- Placing drop cloths under all work areas to protect the garden soil and sidewalk from debris and paint.
- Working carefully around the garden by using planks and reaching over fences when possible to avoid damaging plants.
We also removed an old bike lock cable from the front fence and ensured that both the garden-facing and street-facing sides of the fences were fully painted.
Gate Post and Stair Post Stabilization
To eliminate movement in the gate and stair posts and make them sturdier, we:
- Cut around the base of the gate post to separate paint from the metal base.
- Removed the post, established a new footing to secure it properly, and reinstalled it in its original location.
- Touched up the paint after reinstallation.
- Fixed the stair post footing to stabilize it and prevent future movement.
Window Frame Repair and Painting
For the damaged window frame, we:
- Planed the top of the window to allow it to close smoothly.
- Removed and replaced the damaged wood on both the top and bottom of the frame.
- Cleaned the affected areas with mold killer before replacing the wood to eliminate any mold risk.
- Took a paint chip to match the existing color and painted the repaired window frame to restore its appearance.

The Result: Enhanced Durability and Curb Appeal
The property in Brooklyn, NY now boasts a freshly painted and protected metal fence, railings, and basement window bars that resist rust and improve the home’s appearance. The window frame functions properly and is free of water damage and mold, while the gate and stair posts are sturdy and safe.
The homeowner was pleased with the professional approach of Zavza Seal and the care taken to protect the garden and surrounding areas during the work.
