Case Study: Cold Kitchen Wall Insulation in Bayport, NY

The Problem:

The homeowner in Bayport was dealing with a persistently cold kitchen, especially around the sink area. During colder months, the exterior wall on both sides of the sink and beneath it allowed significant heat loss. This created uncomfortable drafts and raised concerns about potential pipe freezing.

Several issues were identified:

  • Poor or insufficient insulation inside the exterior wall
  • Noticeable cold spots under the sink cabinet
  • Increased heating costs due to heat escaping through the wall
  • Risk of frozen pipes during winter

The kitchen layout made access challenging. Appliances such as the dishwasher and refrigerator had to be temporarily removed to properly reach the affected wall areas.

The Solution:

Our Zavza Seal team implemented a targeted insulation strategy designed to improve thermal performance while minimizing disruption.

Step 1: Safe Access to Wall Cavities

We carefully removed the dishwasher and refrigerator to expose the exterior wall. Small, controlled access openings were created to inspect the cavity conditions.

Step 2: Adaptive Insulation Installation

Based on real-time inspection inside the wall, our installer selected the most effective material:

  • Dense pack cellulose insulation for tightly filling cavities and reducing air movement
  • Closed cell spray foam for superior air sealing and moisture resistance

Both options were applied to achieve an approximate R-value of 12, significantly improving heat retention.

Step 3: Under Sink Insulation and Pipe Protection

To address the coldest area:

  • A portion of the back cabinet under the sink was removed for direct access
  • The wall cavity beneath the sink was insulated using the same adaptive method
  • All exposed pipes were wrapped with closed cell foam insulation to prevent freezing

Step 4: Restoration and Finishing

After completing the insulation:

  • All access points were sealed, taped, and compounded
  • Surfaces were prepared for final sanding and painting
  • Optional painting services were offered once the compound fully cured

The Result:

The transformation was immediate and measurable:

  • Noticeably warmer kitchen environment
  • Elimination of cold drafts near the sink area
  • Improved energy efficiency and reduced heat loss
  • Enhanced protection against frozen pipes
  • Clean, seamless wall restoration ready for paint

The homeowner now enjoys a more comfortable and energy-efficient kitchen without any visible signs of the work performed.

Why This Matters?

Proper insulation in exterior kitchen walls is critical, especially in colder regions like New York. Areas around sinks are particularly vulnerable due to plumbing exposure and limited insulation coverage.

Additionally, the ENERGY STAR program highlights that sealing and insulating key areas like exterior walls and plumbing zones can prevent energy loss and protect home systems.

Thinking About Fixing a Cold Kitchen Wall?

If your kitchen feels cold or your pipes are at risk during winter, this type of targeted insulation upgrade can make a major difference without requiring a full renovation.
