Case Study: Driveway Storm Channel Replacement in Great Neck, NY

Our Zavza Seal team recently completed a driveway storm channel replacement project in Great Neck, NY to improve drainage and protect the homeowner’s driveway.

The Problem

The existing storm channel installed across the driveway had become damaged and needed to be replaced. Because storm channels play an important role in directing rainwater away from the property, a failing drainage system can allow water to collect near the driveway and surrounding areas.

The homeowner confirmed that the dry well was functioning properly, so the project focused solely on replacing the damaged storm channel and reconnecting it to the existing drainage line.

In addition, the project required compliance with local building department requirements, including an inspection and safety barricades during excavation.

Our Solution

Our team began by carefully removing and disposing of the existing damaged storm channel.

Next, we excavated a trench approximately 16 linear feet long with a slight slope to ensure proper water flow. The trench was prepared to accommodate the new storm channel and a concrete envelope surrounding the system for added durability and support. We also compacted the soil to create a stable base before installation.

To reconnect the drainage system, we exposed the existing drain line leading to the dry well and carefully cut the pipe to the required size. New pipes and fittings were installed to create a secure connection between the storm channel and the existing drainage line.

Once the drainage components were in place, we positioned the new Type C storm channel and prepared it for concrete installation. Protective tape was applied over the grate before pouring high-strength 4,000 PSI concrete around the channel. The channel was installed slightly below the finished concrete surface to help ensure proper water flow and long-term performance.

After finishing the concrete work, our team installed a horizontal row of pavers to complete the surrounding area. The concrete was allowed to cure properly before removing the protective tape from the storm channel grate.

Additional Safety and Inspection Work

As part of the project, local building requirements had to be followed.

After excavating the trench, work was temporarily paused while waiting for the required inspection. During this time, our team installed a barricade system around the excavation area to maintain safety and comply with the requirements of the Village of Thomaston Building Department. The barricades were removed once the inspection process was completed.

The Results

By the end of the project, the homeowner had:

  • A brand-new Type C driveway storm channel.
  • Improved water drainage across the driveway.
  • A durable 4,000 PSI concrete installation designed for long-term performance.
  • Properly connected drainage piping leading to the existing dry well.
  • A clean and professionally finished driveway surface.
  • A drainage system installed in compliance with local inspection and safety requirements.
