The Problem
The homeowner noticed water collecting near the exterior door during heavy rain. Over time, moisture around the door threshold raised concerns about water reaching the foundation and damaging the surrounding concrete.
During our inspection, we found that the existing door saddle drainage system was not allowing water to escape properly. The weep holes that help direct water away from the doorway were not functioning as intended, allowing moisture to collect around the entrance instead of draining away.
The homeowner also mentioned that two exterior rooms were difficult to keep comfortable throughout the year. They experienced cold drafts during winter and warmer indoor temperatures during summer, causing the heating and cooling system to work harder than necessary.
After evaluating the walls, we determined that improving the insulation would help increase energy efficiency while making the home more comfortable.
Our Solution
To correct the water intrusion problem, we carefully removed the concrete along the exterior door saddle to expose the existing weep holes. We also removed a section of the storm channel so we could modify the drainage system.
Our team installed specialized drainage tubes that connected the weep holes to the saddle drainage openings using professional construction adhesives. This allowed trapped water to flow through the drainage system as originally intended.
After the drainage improvements were completed, we filled the cavity with high strength waterproofing mortar. The mortar was shaped to create a proper slope that directs rainwater away from the foundation instead of allowing it to collect near the doorway.
To provide additional protection, we prepared the surrounding concrete surface and applied a layer of 6,000 PSI waterproofing cement across the entire repair area. This created a durable, water resistant surface designed to help protect the entrance from future moisture intrusion.
The second part of the project focused on improving the home’s insulation.
We created small access openings between the wall studs and installed dense packed cellulose insulation throughout approximately 400 square feet of two exterior walls. The insulation was blown into each wall cavity until it reached the proper density, helping achieve an insulation value of approximately R-12.
Once the insulation was installed, every access opening was professionally patched, taped, and finished with joint compound, leaving the walls ready for sanding and painting.
The cellulose insulation selected for this project offers several long-term benefits. It is environmentally friendly, fire resistant, moisture resistant, helps reduce outside noise, and improves the home’s overall energy efficiency while contributing to healthier indoor air quality.

The completed project addressed two important concerns with one coordinated solution.
