Case Study: Full Apartment Insulation Upgrade in East Hampton, NY

Project Overview

Our team at Zavza Seal completed a full insulation project for a multi level home in East Hampton, NY. The work included the basement apartment, first floor, and second floor apartments.

We insulated all exterior walls and the ceiling of the second floor. The goal was to improve energy efficiency, reduce outside noise, and make the home more comfortable year round.

The Problem

The home had older construction with plaster walls and little to no insulation.

This caused several issues. The home was losing heat in the winter and staying too warm in the summer. Energy bills were higher than they should be.

There were also drafts coming from windows, doors, and the main entrance. This made certain rooms feel uncomfortable.

Noise from outside and between floors was also a problem, especially in a multi unit setup.

Another challenge was the construction itself. Older plaster walls are harder to work with. Cutting access points and installing insulation needs extra care to avoid damage.

The Solution

We created a plan that would fully insulate the home while protecting the existing structure.

We carefully cut access ports in the walls and ceilings where needed. Because of the old plaster construction, special care was taken during this step.

We then installed dense packed cellulose insulation in all wall and ceiling cavities.

  • Exterior walls were insulated to an R value of 21
  • Second floor ceiling was insulated to an R value of 38

This method fills all gaps and helps block air movement and noise.

After the insulation was installed, all access points were patched, taped, and compounded to restore the surface.

We also sealed the main door, along with all windows and doors throughout the home. This helps stop drafts and improves energy savings.

The insulation we used is environmentally friendly and safe. It has a Class 1 fire rating, helps resist moisture, and provides strong sound absorption.

The Result

The home is now much more comfortable and energy efficient.

Rooms maintain a steady temperature, and drafts have been eliminated. This helps reduce heating and cooling costs.

Noise from outside and between floors is now much lower, which is a big improvement for apartment living.

Even with the challenges of older construction, the insulation was installed successfully and the structure was preserved.

Overall, the home now feels quieter, warmer, and more efficient.

Why This Matters

Homes without proper insulation lose energy quickly and feel less comfortable.

Dense packed cellulose is a great solution because it fills gaps completely and improves both thermal and sound performance.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, sealing and insulating a home can reduce energy waste and improve comfort.
