The Problem:
The homeowner wanted to improve the existing backyard patio and make the outdoor space larger. The plan was to extend the patio area by approximately 5 additional feet and create a new paver surface.
The existing substrate needed to be removed and the ground prepared before the new pavers could be installed. Simply placing pavers over the existing surface could lead to an uneven patio and movement over time.
The project also needed a properly prepared base to give the new patio a firm and stable surface.
The Solution:
The Zavza Seal team prepared the backyard for the new paver patio from the ground up. Because this was a labor-only project, the homeowner supplied and paid for all materials.
Our team completed the following work:
1. Removed the Existing Substrate
We removed the existing substrate from the work area so the ground could be properly prepared for the new patio.
2. Prepared and Excavated the Area
We excavated the area as needed to create enough space for the new patio base and pavers. The ground was prepared to provide a solid foundation for the new surface.
3. Installed and Compacted the Gravel Base
We installed approximately 2 inches of gravel and compacted it thoroughly. Proper compaction helps create a firm base and reduces the risk of movement beneath the pavers.
4. Installed the Weed Barrier
A weed blocker membrane was installed over the prepared area to help reduce weed growth through the patio base.
5. Built the Sub-Base
We installed the remaining required layers of compacted sub-base material. Each layer was properly compacted before moving to the next stage.
6. Installed the Paver Base
The paver base was installed and prepared to provide a level surface for the finished patio.
7. Installed the Pavers
Once the base was ready, we installed the new pavers across the patio area, including the approximately 5-foot extension.
8. Installed Patio Edge Restraints
We installed patio edge restraints around the completed area to help keep the pavers in place and maintain the shape of the patio.
The Result:
The Flushing, NY homeowner now has an expanded backyard patio with a properly prepared base and new paver surface.
The project gave the homeowner more usable outdoor space while providing a clean and finished surface for the backyard.
A strong paver patio starts below the surface. Proper excavation, a compacted base and secure edge restraints can all help create a more stable and long-lasting installation.
Why Proper Patio Preparation Matters?
Pavers need a stable base. If the ground underneath is not prepared correctly, pavers can shift, sink or become uneven.
For homeowners planning a patio project in Queens or other parts of New York City, it is also important to check whether the planned work requires permits or other approvals. The NYC Department of Buildings notes that permit requirements depend on the type and scope of construction work.
