The Problem
A homeowner in the Bronx wanted to improve the energy efficiency of their home without removing large sections of drywall. The first and second floor exterior walls had little to no insulation, making it difficult to keep the home comfortable throughout the year.
During our inspection, we also found that the home’s new front wall had not yet been insulated. The older front wall was not included in the project because it was outside the agreed scope of work.
Without proper wall insulation, homes often experience:
- Higher heating and cooling costs.
- Uneven indoor temperatures.
- Drafts near exterior walls.
- Increased outside noise.
- Reduced overall energy efficiency.
The homeowner wanted a solution that would improve comfort while minimizing disruption to the interior of the home.
Our Solution
After evaluating the property, our team recommended installing blown-in cellulose insulation throughout approximately 1,488 square feet of first and second floor exterior walls.
Our work included:
- Cutting small 4-inch access openings near the ceiling molding every 16 inches.
- Blowing environmentally friendly cellulose insulation into each wall cavity.
- Installing enough insulation to achieve a minimum R-19 insulation value.
- Carefully sealing each access opening.
- Taping and applying joint compound to restore the walls after installation.
This method allowed us to insulate the existing walls without major demolition while providing excellent thermal performance.
Why We Use Cellulose Insulation?
Cellulose insulation is one of the most effective options for improving the performance of existing homes.
The insulation installed on this project offers several important benefits:
- Improves energy efficiency throughout the home.
- Reduces heating and cooling costs.
- Helps block outside noise.
- Provides excellent moisture resistance.
- Is fire resistant and meets Class 1 fire rating requirements.
- Uses environmentally friendly materials.
- Is Gold Certified and contributes to healthier indoor air quality.
Blown-in cellulose also fills small gaps and voids that traditional batt insulation often misses, helping create a more consistent thermal barrier.
Optional Interior Finishing
After completing the insulation work, the homeowner had the option to choose additional finishing services.
These options included:
- Sanding and painting only the repaired wall areas.
- Painting entire walls after the repairs were completed.
This gave the homeowner flexibility based on their renovation plans and budget.
Optional Attic Insulation
During our inspection, we also identified an opportunity to improve the home’s energy performance even further.
We recommended insulating the attic ceiling, angled walls, window walls, and third-floor stairwell walls using the same blown-in cellulose insulation system to create a more complete thermal envelope.
The Result
The homeowner now has properly insulated exterior walls that help maintain more consistent indoor temperatures throughout the year.
By using blown-in cellulose insulation, we were able to significantly improve the home’s energy efficiency while minimizing disruption to the existing interior finishes.
