Case Study: Whole Home Renovation in West Hempstead, NY

The Zavza Seal team recently completed a large-scale home renovation and insulation project for a homeowner in West Hempstead, NY. The property was an older home with poor insulation, outdated electrical systems, aging interior finishes, and an unfinished basement.

The homeowner wanted to improve comfort, energy efficiency, storage space, and overall functionality while modernizing several areas of the home.

Our team performed a full renovation that included insulation upgrades, electrical improvements, basement finishing, kitchen remodeling, bathroom renovations, framing work, flooring installation, and waterproofing protection.

The Problem:

The home was experiencing several issues commonly found in older Long Island properties.

The homeowner was dealing with:

  • Drafts and uneven temperatures throughout the house
  • Limited insulation inside exterior walls and ceilings
  • Outdated electrical wiring
  • Aging plaster walls and damaged wood areas
  • Poor basement usability and limited storage
  • Older radiators and inefficient room layouts
  • Worn flooring and outdated finishes

The basement also needed waterproofing improvements and a more functional layout for long-term use.

Our Solution:

To improve the home’s efficiency and comfort, our team installed dense-packed cellulose insulation throughout the second and third floor exterior walls.

Access ports were carefully created so insulation could be installed inside the wall cavities. The walls were upgraded to an R-16 insulation value, while the third-floor ceiling was insulated to R-32 for improved thermal protection and sound reduction.

We also insulated exposed exterior wall areas and basement ceiling sections using closed-cell foam insulation systems designed to improve energy efficiency and moisture resistance.

Additional insulation benefits included:

The main entry door was also sealed to help reduce drafts and lower heating and cooling costs.

Interior Renovation Work

Beyond insulation improvements, the project included major interior remodeling work throughout the home.

Electrical Upgrades

Our electricians replaced outdated wiring throughout the property and installed:

  • New recessed lighting
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • New outlets and fixtures
  • Outdoor lighting and GFCI protection
  • Updated lighting in the foyer, dining room, living room, and breakfast area

Basement Improvements

The basement was fully upgraded to create a cleaner and more functional living space.

The work included:

  • Waterproofing and crack repairs
  • European-style finished basement walls
  • New basement flooring installation
  • Self-leveling floor corrections
  • New basement stairs
  • A full basement bathroom
  • Dedicated storage space for bulk household items
  • Framing around utility areas

The exposed basement surfaces were sealed and protected using waterproofing materials to help improve long-term durability.

Kitchen and Living Area Renovations

The first floor also received major improvements to modernize the home’s layout and appearance.

Our work included:

  • Installing new kitchen cabinets
  • New countertops and backsplash installation
  • Matching hardwood flooring
  • Crown molding and baseboard installation
  • Window reframing
  • Fireplace stone tile installation
  • Sliding door installation in the breakfast room
  • Relocating selected door openings for better flow

Structural framing work was also completed to remove load-bearing walls and create a more open layout.

Bathroom and Plumbing Updates

The renovation also included updates to multiple bathrooms throughout the home.

Our team:

  • Fully renovated the second-floor bathroom
  • Refinished the half bath
  • Added a basement bathroom
  • Replaced bathroom doors
  • Relocated and repaired hot water piping
  • Repositioned plumbing lines to improve layout functionality

The Results:

After completion, the home was transformed into a more comfortable, energy-efficient, and modern living space.

The homeowner now benefits from:

  • Improved insulation and lower energy loss
  • Better indoor temperature control
  • Reduced outside noise
  • Modernized electrical systems
  • Updated living spaces and finishes
  • A functional finished basement
  • Improved storage and layout flexibility

Projects like this are especially valuable for older homes in West Hempstead where outdated insulation and aging systems can impact comfort and efficiency over time.
