Repairing a Leaking Wood Hot Tub in Brooklyn, NY

At Zavza Seal, our team recently completed a custom hot tub waterproofing and sealing project for a homeowner in Brooklyn. The client had owned a large wood hot tub for several years, but over time the structure began leaking and losing water daily.

Our team designed a specialized fiberglass and epoxy liner system to seal the interior of the hot tub, stop the leaks, and help extend the life of the structure.

The Problem

The homeowner noticed the wood hot tub was slowly losing water and needed to be refilled every day. The leaking had gradually worsened over several months.

The hot tub measured:

  • 44 inches high
  • 72 inches across
  • Approximately 14 feet around
  • Capacity of roughly 700 gallons

Because the hot tub was made from wood, small gaps and weakened areas had developed over time from moisture exposure, temperature changes, and years of use.

The homeowner wanted a long-lasting interior waterproofing solution without replacing the entire hot tub.

Our Hot Tub Waterproofing Solution

After evaluating the condition of the tub, our team proposed installing a fiberglass and epoxy liner system directly inside the existing structure.

This approach allowed us to fully encapsulate the interior while preserving the original wood hot tub.

Preparing the Hot Tub

Before work could begin, the hot tub needed to remain empty for five days to allow the interior surfaces to dry properly.

Our crew then:

  • Removed three built-in wood seats
  • Prepared the interior wood surfaces
  • Coordinated the epoxy color tinting process to closely match the existing red wood finish

Once the liner installation was complete, the seats were carefully reinstalled using stainless steel screws for improved durability and corrosion resistance.

Fiberglass and Epoxy Liner Installation

To permanently seal the interior, we installed a reinforced fiberglass and epoxy liner throughout the hot tub.

The liner system:

  • Measured approximately 1/16 inch thick
  • Fully encapsulated the interior surfaces
  • Extended two inches over the top edge
  • Wrapped two inches down the exterior edge for additional protection

This waterproofing system was specifically selected because it can withstand water temperatures up to 110°F, making it ideal for hot tub applications.

Color Matching the Interior Finish

A major concern for the homeowner was maintaining the original appearance of the wood hot tub.

After discussions with the epoxy manufacturer’s technical department, our team used a tintable epoxy product and customized the color blend to closely match the natural red wood appearance.

This helped preserve the visual character of the hot tub while adding modern waterproofing protection.

The Curing Process

Once installation was complete, the liner system required a full seven-day curing period before water could be added back into the tub.

This curing time allowed the fiberglass and epoxy materials to fully harden and bond to the interior surfaces for maximum durability and waterproof performance.

The Result

After the project was completed, the homeowner had:

  • A fully sealed hot tub interior
  • Protection against ongoing water leaks
  • Reinforced waterproof surfaces
  • Improved long-term durability
  • A finish that closely matched the original wood appearance

The restored hot tub now holds water properly again without the need for constant refilling.
